Welcome to Year 1
The children in Year One have settled well into their new routine into Key Stage One. It is quite a change from Early Years. Mrs Calladine, Mrs Bateman, Mrs Kauser, Miss Salinger and Mr Gormley are all settled too! We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning.
During the year we will be developing our skills as writers as we focus on phonics and sentence structure. We will learn how to apply phonic knowledge to write words and spell common words accurately . We will also be thinking carefully about the formation of our letters and neat, clear handwriting.
You can support your child at home by asking them to write for a range of purposes and practising their spelling and handwriting regularly.
As readers, we will explore a variety of texts and enjoy sharing class books as well as individual reading books. We will be working on our decoding skills and understanding the text. The authors we are focussing on this term are Anthony Browne and Julia Donaldson. Ask your children about them and their books.
To support your child at home, read with them at least 3 times a week and discuss what they have read.
To support them at home, encourage your child to practise their counting skills and learn their number bonds to 10 off by heart.
Out topics for the year...
In Year One we have been learning about Fairtrade. With our other MAT schools we had a competition to see who could design the BEST Fairtrade poster. This was the winner....isn't it fantastic! Well done Aiminee!
We had fun dressing up for Halloween in school. Then we enjoyed our Halloween disco after school. Look at our fantastic costumes!
Here we are enjoying some Cosmic Yoga just before we go to the hall for PE. We love being ACTIVE!
We have had fun getting ready for Christmas. Our grown ups have been to help us make Christmas decorations and decorate our classrooms.
